Turn of the Century

Paintings with classical and narrative themes, as well as landscapes, continued to be popular well into the 20th century.

Alfred East was a typical Edwardian landscape artist. His paintings clearly show the influence of European pastoral painters and were part of a tradition passed down from 18th and 19th century artists such as Constable and Turner.

Alfred Munnings also created idealised landscapes, but incorporated Impressionist ideas and techniques. Laura Knight painted pastoral and harbour scenes in the open air which referred back to Dutch art of the 1870s. At the turn of the century, despite traditional, conservative nationalist outlooks, many artists were starting to experiment with new techniques and approaches.
