Solomon Solomon (1858 - 1940) An Allegory, 1904 Oil on canvas 269 x 150cm

Solomon was interested in finding the common ground between religions, although his grand symbolic compositions often have an erotic undercurrent. In this painting he included references to Christianity, Judaism and paganism.

Christ is borne aloft by angels, behind him the prophet Moses clutches the tablets of the commandments. Above are Bacchus, the god of wine and Venus, the goddess of love, while at the bottom of the composition three naked Sirens lure a passing ship onto the rocks.
