

After studying in Paris Clausen became the leading follower of Jules Bastien-Lepage's naturalist style specialising in single-figure compositions. From the 1890s he was drawn to a more Impressionistic technique and was particularly inspired by Monet in his palette and
choice of subject matter.
He spent much of his working life based in the Essex countryside, which provided the subject matter for many of his paintings.
